LAB-18 · A film in one take

The last one percent.

One drawing. One light, and this time it can fade. Scroll, or let it roll.

The demo

The demo always works.

One step, one take, the best of five. Right 95% of the time feels like finished.

Twenty times

Now do it twenty times in a row.

Real work is a chain. Every station keeps 95% of what reaches it. Nothing breaks. It just multiplies.

Your turn

How good does one step have to be?

Set it, and watch what arrives at the far end of twenty.

Each step is right
The nines

A nine is not one percent.

99% is three and a half days a year of being wrong. Each nine after it is a tenth of what was left, and a different kind of work. A car finished the desert course in 2005. The public rode with no driver in 2020. The fifteen years between were nines.

The shelf

Half of it never leaves the shelf.

46% of AI proofs of concept were scrapped before production last year. The model that holds a task for sixteen hours at a coin toss holds it for three when it has to be right four times in five.

The gate

Put a gate where it can fail.

Check the work where checking is cheap. Retry what fails. The chain stops multiplying mistakes and starts catching them.

One try

Some things get one try.

An alert at 03:12 has no second take. The demo is the 95. Bolted does the part after it.

The sheet

Twenty steps. One of them is yours.

1230 millimetres, two relays, four nines, one try.

The making of

A light that can fade.

The third reel, and two additions to the format. In the first two films the light was directed. Here it is a number: the chance the work is still right. Its brightness and its colour are computed from that number, so nobody animated the fade. It is arithmetic.

New · the tagA value that travels with the light. A small label on a leader, in the drawing's own voice, pinned to the light every frame. Here it counts the chance down, station by station, from 95 % to 35.8 %.
New · the instrumentOne chapter where the viewer takes a control. Four keys set how good a single step is. The curve on the sheet redraws, the far end of the relay brightens or dies, and the tag does the sum. Leave the chapter and the dial goes back. Roll passes straight through it.
The argumentDemo, chain, your hand on it, what a nine is worth, the shelf of pilots, the gate, and the one message that gets a single take. The nineteen-in-twenty pilot statistic everybody quotes was left off the sheet: it does not survive a look at its source.
The numbersThe arithmetic is exact. The gated relay is marked illustrative on the sheet. Sources for the rest are in LAST-PERCENT.md.
The controlsRoll plays it in one minute. The chapter bar, 1 to 8 and the arrow keys jump. Space rolls. N opens the director's notes.
